Famine Threshold Surpassed in Somalia
FEWS NET has just released an alert indicating that the prevalance of acute malnutrition and rates of crude mortality have surpassed famine thresholds in three additional areas of Somalia. With tens of thousands of deaths having already occurred, the famine is only expected to spread in the coming weeks and is likely to persist until at least December 2011.

FEWS NET Releases Latest Price Watch Information
The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), funded by USAID, has released its latest monthly price watch detailing staple food prices for February 2011. These reports provide food security updates for 25 countries vulnerable to food insecurity, focusing on impacts on livelihoods and markets. These updates can help policymakers recognize and mitigate potential threats to food security.

Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition
The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) has launched a global and inclusive online consultation on the Global Strategic Framework for Food Security and Nutrition – a document being developed to improve coordination and support global, regional and country-led actions to prevent future food crises, eliminate hunger and ensure food security and nutrition for all.
It is an opportunity for all stakeholders around the world to participate in the global policy debate and ultimately contribute to this important framework.
G20 Reports Highlight Need to Address Food Insecurity
The ongoing crisis in the Horn of Africa has shown that the challenge of food insecurity is alive and well. The 2011 G20 meetings have paid particular attention to the issues of high food prices, food price volatility, and food insecurity. G20 leaders have involved leading international institutions, such as the FAO, IFAD, WFP, and IFPRI, and have established several action plans to address these important issues.
