New labeling system may bring safe, affordable maize flour to Kenyan consumers

Kenyan consumers are demanding maize flour that is safe from contamination by aflatoxin, a chemical linked to cancer and other health problems. The toxin, produced by certain fungi, is commonly found in maize from several regions of Kenya due to a combination of environmental conditions and poor post-harvest practices.

This week IFPRI launched a new Spanish-language web portal that focuses on food and nutrition security in Central America, the Food Security Portal for Central America and the Caribbean (CAC-FSP). The objective of the portal is to provide a set of indicators on food and nutrition security and early warning mechanisms as well as opportunities for dialogue among policymakers, researchers, the private sector and others seeking to increase the resilience of the world’s poor to possible food-related crises, including price and climate shocks.

G20 Ministers of Agriculture met in Istanbul on 7-8 May 2015 for the first time since 2011 to address rising challenges concerning food security.

World population is expected to reach nine billion by 2050. This will increase the challenge for global food security and nutrition. In their Communique, Ministers underlined their commitment to meet this challenge. They agreed that establishing sustainable food systems is essential to cope with growing challenges in food security. They also highlighted the importance of reducing food losses and waste, which is a global problem.

The G20 Agriculture Ministers met in Istanbul this May to discuss the group’s ongoing efforts on the issue of food and nutrition security. In their final report, the ministers highlighted several important global issues linked to food security, including the impacts of climate change and the need for sustainable food systems, the need to minimize global food loss and waste, and the goal of increasing incomes and job opportunities in rural areas, particularly for women and youth.
