flickr/Francisco AragãoToday marks the 19th annual World Water Day, a campaign designed to draw attention to pressing issues related to sustainable global water use. The theme of this year's World Water Day is Water and Food Security, an issue that will only grow in importance as the world approaches a population of 9 billion.
The World Water Day website discusses the linkages between water, population growth, climate change, and food security, including how much water is needed to produce both crops and livestock for food and how climate change will play a role in global weather events and food security, as well as ways to engage in conservation agriculture and produce more food with less water.
