GIEW Crop Prospects and Food Situation - No 1 on March 2020

FAO assesses that globally 44 countries, of which 34 are in Africa, continue to be in need of external assistance for food. Agricultural droughts have aggravated food insecurity conditions, due to reduced harvests that also caused price hikes. Conflict driven crises continued to be the primary cause of the high levels of severe food insecurity.

Report on Rwanda National Policy Dialogue: Building Productive Capacities for Rwanda’s Agricultural Transformation, Rural Development, and Food Security

The Food Security Portal, in partnership with the Economic Policy Research Network Rwanda (EPRN), held a one-day national policy dialogue on building Rwanda's productive capacities. The event was a follow-on to the 6th EPRN Annual Economic Research Conference and emphasized engaging up-and-coming members of the policy and research communities, including policy analysts from MINAGRI, lecturers from the University of Rwanda, members of the EPRN network, students, and youth. This is a summary report of that event.

Yemen: Acute Malnutrition January - July 2020 and Projection for August - December 2020

Over half a million cases of children aged 0 to 59 months, and more than a quarter of a million cases of pregnant and lactating women, are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition during the course of 2020. Out of the 19 zones included in the IPC Acute Malnutrition (IPC AMN) analysis, two zones are classified in Critical (IPC AMN Phase 4), eight in Serious (IPC AMN Phase 3) and the remaining zones in Alert (IPC AMN Phase 2) during the current period of January July 2020. The situation is expected to deteriorate further during the projection period of August – December 2020. A total of seven zones will likely move into a higher Phase, with 15 of the 19 zones in IPC AMN Phase 3 or IPC AMN Phase 4.

From a global perspective, food commodity markets in 2019/20 should continue to be generally well supplied, with international prices remaining below their recent peaks. However, a fast changing trade environment along with the outbreaks of important animal and plant diseases could pose challenges for global market stability.

Early Warning Early Action Systems

Existing food security and agricultural early warning systems include FAO’s Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS), USAID’s Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), the MARS Crop Yield Forecasting System (MCYFS), the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS), which monitors commodity prices, food security, and trade, the World Food Programme Seasonal Monitor, and FAO’s Early Warning Early Action (EWEA) system, among others. These systems provide regular updates of food prices, food production and supply levels, harvest forecasts, weather forecasts, and food assistance needs, as well as targeted alerts regarding ongoing or anticipated food security crises at national and regional levels.

Global Report on Food Crises 2017

The report provides food security population estimates for countries selected on the basis of the degree of risk of facing acute food crises in 2016 and beyond. In addition, a detailed food security analysis is presented for those countries and/or population groups facing high severity and magnitude of acute food insecurity based on IPC/CH classification.
