The population of Gaza is on the brink of famine
The food insecurity situation in the Gaza Strip is becoming increasingly dire. A recent blog of just 10 days ago and based on an assessment by the World Food Programme pointed out that during October and November, 80 percent of the population in Gaza was displaced and more than 80 percent suffered food deficiencies.
Central America and Caribbean Facing Rising Food Insecurity
IPC Phase 2 through 4 (Stressed through Emergency) food insecurity is expected to continue in Central America and the Caribbean through September, according to an alert from FEWS Net.

These challenges have disrupted markets, driven up food and fertilizer prices and price volatility, reduced food availability and accessibility, and pushed millions of people into hunger.
FEWS Net Releases Alert for East Africa
FEWS Net has issued an alert for East Africa, stating that a delayed start to the annual June-September rains is threatening harvests throughout the region. While rainfall has improved in recent weeks, FEWS estimates that normal rainfall would need to not only continue for the remainder of the season but extend past the normal rainy season in order for crops to fully recover. In large areas of Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, total rainfall has been 20-50 percent lower than average.
Famine Threshold Surpassed in Somalia
FEWS NET has just released an alert indicating that the prevalance of acute malnutrition and rates of crude mortality have surpassed famine thresholds in three additional areas of Somalia. With tens of thousands of deaths having already occurred, the famine is only expected to spread in the coming weeks and is likely to persist until at least December 2011.
