With support from the European Commission, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and REPOA, a nongovernmental organization that conducts policy research for development, jointly organized a virtual national policy dialogue event on Informal Cross-Border Trade in Tanzania: Implications for Food Security and Resilience on October 15, 2020. Report: COVID-19 and its Impacts on Childhood Malnutrition and Nutrition-related Mortality

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) conducted recent analysis on economic shocks and child wasting showing an important increase in the prevalence of moderate or severe wasting among children younger than 5 years due to COVID-19-related losses in GNI per capita. To consider the implications of this analysis for Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), IFPRI, the Ethiopia National Information Platform for Nutrition (NIPN) and the Food Security Portal (FSP) Project co-hosted a webinar on “COVID-19 and its impacts on childhood malnutrition and nutrition related mortality” on 23rd September 2020, which this report summarizes.

Report: Webinar on Near-Real-Time Monitoring of Food Crisis Risk Factors: State of Knowledge and Future Prospects

This webinar focused on benchmarking progress in near-real-time monitoring by highlighting existing
efforts and discussing future prospects of this area of work. Arif Husain (WFP), Laura Glaeser (FEWS
NET), and Mario Zappacosta (FAO Global Information and Early Warning System – GIEWS) shared their
respective institutions’ work on near-real-time monitoring. Daniel Maxwell (Tufts University), Chris
Barrett (Cornell University), Kathy Baylis (University of Illinois), and David Laborde (IFPRI) provided a
research perspective, sharing some recent efforts on using near-real-time monitoring to improve the
ability to assess and predict food crisis risk. The webinar clarified the role of near real-time monitoring in
existing early warning systems, highlighted several existing monitoring platforms and tools, and shared
some of the latest research in improving the use of real-time monitoring for food crisis assessment and
prediction.

Report on Rwanda National Policy Dialogue: Building Productive Capacities for Rwanda’s Agricultural Transformation, Rural Development, and Food Security

The Food Security Portal, in partnership with the Economic Policy Research Network Rwanda (EPRN), held a one-day national policy dialogue on building Rwanda's productive capacities. The event was a follow-on to the 6th EPRN Annual Economic Research Conference and emphasized engaging up-and-coming members of the policy and research communities, including policy analysts from MINAGRI, lecturers from the University of Rwanda, members of the EPRN network, students, and youth. This is a summary report of that event.
