Food security

Food should be a reliable, secure factor in one's life. Everyone should be able to eat enough food to at least satisfy the minimum level of calories needed to maintain a healthy life—usually defined between 1,750 and 2,030 kilocalories per person per day. The map shows countries’ calorie supply per capita. It divides the total food supply for human consumption by total population.

Low income, high food prices, or other market factors often are an obstacle to households remaining above the minimum dietary level. The Food Security Portal, facilitated by IFPRI, aims to provide improved food security for the world's poor and help increase resilience of global food systems against food and financial crises.

The project brings together international, regional, and country-level data, news, and research aimed at meeting countries' immediate food security needs, as well as building long-term global food security. The site contains over 40 indicators related to food security, commodity prices, economics, and human well-being, drawn from public data sources including the World Bank, FAO, UNICEF, and IFPRI.
