In mid-2009, 1.9 million people were food insecure in Haiti, a reduction of more than 1 million people from last year’s hurricane season (FEWS NET 2009). However, the country continues to be a global hungerspot, and the state of hunger is “alarming” or 24.3 as measured by the Global Hunger Index 2008. Food security ranges from moderate to serious in the Northeast, Southeast, the Nippes, the Grand Anse departments, and in the shanty towns (FEWS NET 2009).
