Although Colombia did not face a food crisis of enormous proportions, food inflation in the country was 13 percent in 2008. High food inflation further fed into the total inflation (7.6 percent) in the country, which rose above the intended target. Three main factors contributed to high food prices in Colombia. First, climatic phenomenon, “El Niño”, significantly reduced food supply. High transportation costs due to high oil prices were further transmitted to high food prices.
