AMIS Market Monitor Examines Market Trends, Supply and Demand

The Agricultural Marketing Information System (AMIS) has released the second edition of its Market Monitor . The publication provides the latest news related to AMIS, as well as in-depth data regarding trends in the world food market, supply-demand balances, and price indices.

This edition of the Market Monitor cites recent cooler and wetter weather in the US as a contributor to moderating futures prices in the commodities markets. Declining expectations of export restrictions from major exporting countries has impacted wheat prices in particular, while rain in both the US and Brazil contributed to a reduction in soybean prices from their summertime record high. Wheat and maize prices did, however, rise again sharply on Friday after the release of the USDA quarterly grains stock report provided lower-than-expected production estimates.

The report also cites relatively low levels of volatility in the commodities markets, with volatility between 20-35 compared to the 60-70 range seen during 2008 and 2010. However, soybeans have continued to show significant volatility in recent weeks.
